The Coxe House

The Future Home of the Jewish Historical Society of Delaware

The Coxe House will provide us with dedicated space and a high-profile location. Our increased visibility will bring the Jewish Historical Society of Delaware to the attention of more people and encourage them to use and help build our archives. We will have ample space for our archives as well as room for office space and a reading room for researchers and group discussions.

The Thomas A. Coxe House

The Coxe family owned the land at 107 and 109 East Sixth Street for more than a century before Thomas Coxe, an owner of a large brickyard, built the house in 1801 for his two daughters.

Built like Philadelphia  "trinity" or "band box" houses then popular, each unit had only one room on each of its three floors. The house was built on land granted to the family by the Duke of York and was occupied by descendants of the Coxe family until 1957.

Work is required to make the building safe and secure. Renovations will include reinforcing the floors to support the weight of our archival materials and upgrading the electric and ventilation systems.
