Holocaust Education Center

The Mission of the Halina Wind Preston Holocaust Education Center is to educate the community on the causes and events of the Holocaust so that its lessons may prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

In May 1978, two Polish Holocaust survivors, Halina Wind Preston and Dorothy Finger had a vision. They first met in Wilmington, where they became lifelong friends, raised families and began careers.

Dorothy survived after having worked as a hard laborer, as a child, by escaping into the forest, where she lived for one year, freezing, starving and barely able to walk. Halina survived 14 months in the sewers of Nazi-occupied Lwow, Poland (now Lviv, Ukraine). Upon Halina’s death, in December 1982, the Holocaust Education Committee was renamed in her memory, and the Halina Wind Preston Holocaust Education Center created to teach current and future generations about the lesson learned from the Holocaust.

Today, after almost four decades, the Halina Wind Preston Holocaust Education Committee thrives as an interfaith volunteer group comprised of Holocaust survivors and their families, Holocaust scholars, teachers, clergy, and community advocates.  Committee members are responsible for the development and implementation of programs and activities provided by the Halina Wind Preston Holocaust Education Center.  Support from the Jewish Federation of Delaware and the Siegel Jewish Community Center in Wilmington, along with various grants and individual contributions, fund our mission.
